• MUGHAM TRIO

The Mugham Trio is a classical ensemble consisting of performers on Azerbaijan’s national musical instruments - the tar, kamancha, and daf (frame drum). This traditional group of instrumentalists, often accompanied by a vocalist (khananda), performs Azerbaijani mugham dastgahs - complex vocal - instrumental compositions of traditional mugham music.

A performance by the Mugham Trio is called a complete vocal-instrumental mugham dastgah. A dastgah is a full version of a mugham, including its introduction (deramed), all sections and branches (shobe and gushes), and the rhythmic episodes such as tasnif (song) and reng or diring (dance interludes).

Each section of the mugham composition includes improvisational, recitative-style vocal melodies that define the musical-poetic content of the piece. These are alternated with strictly rhythmic parts, where vocal episodes are known as tasnif and dance episodes as reng.
